The bourdon tube

The Bourdon tube is also an elastic element type of pressure transducer. It is relatively cheap and is commonly used for measuring the gauge pressure of both gaseous and liquid fluids.

How does the Bourdon tube make the needle move?

When pressure is applied to the measuring system through the pressure port (socket), the pressure causes the bourdon tube to straighten itself, causing the tip to move. The motion of the tip is transmitted via the link to the movement which converts the linear motion of the bourdon tube to a rotational motion.

Why is it called a Bourdon tube?

In 1849, the French engineer Eugène Bourdon patented the pressure-measuring device commonly known today as the Bourdon tube.

What is Bourdon tube pressure?

A bourdon tube pressure gauge is a mechanical pressure measuring instrument that reads the pressure without requiring any electrical power. It is generally used for the measurement of pressure from 0.6 to 7000 bar (8 to 10000 psi).

What is used for measuring pressure?

Instruments used to measure and display pressure mechanically are called pressure gauges, vacuum gauges or compound gauges (vacuum & pressure). The widely used Bourdon gauge is a mechanical device, which both measures and indicates and is probably the best known type of gauge.

What is working principle of pressure gauge?

Mechanical pressure gauges utilise an inner tube that is connected to a gear and shaft assembly that work together to move a pointer. When the pressure within the tube surges, the tube uncoils slightly. As the tube uncoils, the motion triggers the gear and shaft system that moves the pointer on the gauge.

What's a Bourdon?

Definition of bourdon 1 : burden entry 3 sense 1. 2a : a drone bass (as in a bagpipe or a hurdy-gurdy) b : a pipe-organ stop of a droning or buzzing quality usually of 16-foot pitch. c : the lowest bell (as in a carillon) in a ring of bells.

What is C type Bourdon tube?

The C-shaped Bourdon tubes, formed into an angle of approx. 250°, can be used for pressures up to 60 bar. For higher pressures, Bourdon tubes with several superimposed windings of the same angular diameter (helical tubes) or with a spiral coil in the one plane (spiral tubes) are used.

How do you calibrate a Bourdon gauge?

To calibrate the gauge, students add weights to a platform on a dead weight tester. The weights put a known force on to a piston. The piston has a known area, so students can calculate the pressure. A flexible tube containing water transfers the pressure on the piston to the Bourdon tube.

How do you fill a Bourdon tube?

The bourdon tube in the gauge can now be filled. Slowly pour or inject the liquid fill fluid into the gauge's inlet port. Heating the fill fluid to the temperature of hot tap water will thin it and ease the filling process. The best gauge fill method is the use of a 15” Hg vacuum (-0.51 bar).

Is Bourdon tube a sensor?

The Bourdon Tube is one of the most common pressure sensors in use. The simplest form of this sensor is made of a C-shaped metal tube. One end of the tube is sealed, and the other end is connected to the source of pressure that is being measured.

How does pressure gauge measure pressure?

One end of the glass tube is connected to a pipeline where the pressure of a fluid is to be measured and the other end is open to the atmosphere. The tube is attached vertically such that the liquid in the pipe can rise into the tube. The pressure reading is indicated by the height of the fluid in the tube.

What are the 4 types of pressure?

Types Of Pressure

  • Absolute pressure.
  • Gauge pressure.
  • Differential pressure.
  • Sealed pressure or vacuum pressure.

What is the unit of pressure gauge?

The unit for a pressure gauge reading relative pressure is psi (pounds per square inch) or psig (pounds per square inch gauge).

What are the two types of pressure?

There are two basic pressure types - absolute and gauge - distinguished by what pressure they are compared to, which is called the reference pressure.

Why is a pressure gauge important?

A pressure gauge is a measuring instrument used to measure the level of pressure in a liquid or gas, across industries. It is a crucial instrument as it also helps control the levels of pressure in liquids and gases and keep them in the required limit. It raises an alarm in case the pressure exceeds.

What is calibration of pressure gauge?

Pressure calibration is the comparison of the output of a pressure gauge or other measuring device against a standard instrument of higher accuracy.

How many types of gauges are there?

All gauges can be divided into four main types, independent of their actual use. Analogue instrument meter with analogue display ("needles"). Until the later decades the most common basic type.

How are gauges made?

Then a worker puts a copper tube into a bending machine that bends cuts and flattens sections of the

What is the synonym of Bourdon?
